Yay! Advent is here! Happy New Year, Church!
My children have been looking forward to Advent. Part of the reason for this is we decorate for Advent, just as we would any other season. My children love what they call “Advent sparkles.” I found purple garland on Christmas a few years ago, complete with little pink circles in it, which we hang in our dining room. I wrap purple glittery ribbon around the banisters. We have a few Advent decorations that hang on the walls and doors, including a traditional December Advent calendar.
My kids enjoy looking at the strands of sequins we hang on the mantle (we add one each week, 3 purple and 1 pink, bought from Hobby Lobby).
New to us this year, they love looking out from our prayer room and seeing “Advent lights.”
They love playing with their Advent and Christmastide prayer room toys: Little People Bethlehem and Nativity sets. They especially love it when Mommy takes the time to narrate the nativity story, using the toys as visual props.
They are also really enjoying our new Advent trees with the Jesse Tree ornaments we bought (see this post for more info). Every morning, during breakfast, we have been reading the story from the book and hanging that day’s ornament on one of our Advent trees. During the day, we have been talking about each of the symbols. I am finding the Jesse Tree to be a useful salvation history primer for 2 and 4 year old children! Little minds soak up more than we know.
These are just a few of the things that are helping to make Advent meaningful and joyful in our household. Whatever you are doing in yours, I hope it is a blessed season for you.
